How long can I expect to be in treatment at DBT Associates of Nyack?
Each patient’s course of treatment is unique. At a minimum, you should anticipate being in DBT treatment for a approximately 26 weeks. This time frame allows for the completion of the DBT Skills Training Class curriculum. While some individuals may require more time to resolve treatment issues, our goal at DBT Associates of Nyack is to get people out of therapy and back into a life worth living.
Do I have to do both the Individual Sessions and DBT Skills Training Class in the DBT Treatment Track?
Yes. DBT is a unique, two component treatment based on outcomes-based research to which we rigorously adhere. The DBT Skills Training Class is exactly that, a class. It is not group therapy. Individuals in treatment acquire the necessary DBT skills in class necessary to help regulate high emotion reactivity. Since this is a Skills Class not a process and/or support group, members are specifically prohibited from disclosing or discussing maladaptive behaviors in class. The Individual Session is the setting to address personal behaviors and apply DBT skills to resolve them.
Do you treat individuals with substance use issues?
Yes. Often, substance use issues are co-occurring to mood disorders such as depression and/or anxiety. DBT has been well researched in the field of substance use and has shown significant efficacy to resolve substance use issues. Members of our treatment team have a wealth of experience working with substance use.
Do you treat individuals with eating disorders?
Yes. It is not uncommon for individuals with high emotion reactivity to develop an eating disorder. Our staff are highly trained in the field of eating disorders treatment.
What if I have a crisis between Individual Sessions?
DBT is unique in this regard. All of our individual clinicians are available for crisis phone coaching between sessions, as are the Skills Training Class facilitators. Our goal is to keep our patients safe and to keep them out of the hospital.
Do you have a psychiatrist as part of DBT Associates of Nyack?
No. However, we refer our patients to a very select few psychiatrists or nurse practitioners for medication evaluations and medication management as needed. If you have a psychiatrist or nurse practitioner that you prefer to continue with we will be happy to collaborate with that individual.
Is Family Therapy or Couples Counseling available?
Yes. In the event that either Family Therapy or Couples Counseling is indicated for a patient’s benefit during treatment, several of our staff are excellent in both areas.
Is there support for family members of patients during treatment?
Yes. We offer a 6 week course in DBT education for family members or persons significant to the patient in treatment. Dates are announced based on client interest.
Is there a Parenting Group?
Yes. We offer an 8 week course in Parent Management for parents of adolescents in treatment. Dates are announced based on client interest.
Can I continue to see my current therapist while in DBT treatment?
Yes, provided that we have written authorization from you to collaborate with your current therapist.
What if I or my loved one needs a higher level of care than DBT Associates of Nyack can provide?
Sometimes this is necessary. However, as with referrals for medications, we refer our patients to a very select group of in-patient / residential programs with which we have direct experience. Our patients usually return to our practice following completion of their program or while transitioning back to individual therapy.
